Ⅰ.  The Function of the Diode of Compressor

The electromagnetic clutch coil of an automotive A/C compressor is an inductive component. When energized, it generates a magnetic field to engage the clutch. When the A/C is switched off and the coil is suddenly de-energized, the magnetic field rapidly decays and generates a high reverse induced electromotive force. Without a discharge path, this high reverse voltage may damage automotive electrical components such as the A/C relay and body control module.

The flyback diode connected in parallel with the clutch circuit is the key protection component. It has a one-way conduction characteristic: when the circuit is supplied with forward voltage, the diode remains off and does not affect the normal engagement of the clutch; when the coil is de-energized and generates high reverse voltage, the diode conducts to release the induced high voltage and protect the vehicle's electrical system.

Note: The polarity of the diode is irreversible. Once DC supply voltage is applied in reverse, the diode will instantly break down and burn out, resulting in permanent physical damage and causing permanent damage to the compressor.

Ⅱ. Misoperations That Can Easily Burn Out the Diode

1. Direct Battery Testing of the Compressor Before Installation

Some repair shops are accustomed to using a battery to directly power the compressor before installation. The purpose is to check whether the compressor clutch can engage properly, avoiding the trouble of discovering a problem only after installation and then having to remove and reinstall the compressor. However, because there is no matching connector available to confirm the correct connection direction, connecting the compressor plug directly to the battery without confirming the polarity creates a high risk of reverse polarity. If the positive and negative poles are connected incorrectly, the battery's DC voltage will be applied in reverse across the diode, which can instantly cause thermal breakdown and damage to the diode, resulting in the compressor being unable to operate.

DYNE brand compressors undergo multiple inspection and testing procedures during the manufacturing process. The diode, coil, clutch assembly, and complete compressor assembly are tested and checked at multiple stages. Only products that pass all inspections are allowed to ship out. Therefore, testing the compressor with a battery before installation is unnecessary and involves a high risk of damage.

Proper connection using the matching connector
Professional equipment is used to test the diode of every compressor

Note: Do not directly connect the vehicle battery to the DYNE compressor to test clutch engagement.

2. Reversed Pins When Replacing the Connector

When the connector on the vehicle side that connects to the compressor is damaged and needs to be replaced, the pin arrangement of the original vehicle wiring harness must be replicated exactly. If the pin arrangement is not reproduced correctly and the positive and negative wires are reversed, once the compressor is installed and powered on after connecting the replacement connector, reverse voltage will be directly applied to the diode. This can damage the diode instantly and cause the compressor to be unable to operate.

Note: When replacing the connector, make sure to use a high-quality connector and, most importantly, strictly replicate the original pin arrangement and wiring configuration.

Ⅲ. Recommendations for Standard Repair Procedures

Stop Using Direct Battery Testing Before Installation

Eliminate the practice of directly connecting a battery to the compressor plug to test clutch engagement before installation.DYNE compressors don't require pre-testing with a battery.

Make sure everything is correct before connecting.

When replacing the connector, be sure to replicate the original vehicle wiring exactly. And take photos to keep a record of the pin positions and wire colors before removing the old connector. Connect the new connector strictly according to the original vehicle wiring sequence. After completing the wiring, check the polarity again, and make sure everything is correct before connecting the connector.

Start the vehicle for testing.

Make sure the connector is properly installed and locked in place, with no looseness or poor contact. Then start the vehicle and test the air conditioning.
